Maryland alleges drug charges in prescription fraud case

On behalf of Jack B. Rubin, PA posted in Drug Charges on Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

Maryland authorities claim to have put an end to a drug ring that was said to be operating in three southern counties. A Maryland woman is now facing drug charges in relation to the prescription drug fraud investigation conducted by authorities. Police allege that the woman began the prescription drug fraud last December, and they have brought charges against others purportedly involved in the illicit prescription drug trafficking.

According to the authorities, prescription drugs with an estimated street value of $85,000 were illicitly obtained. They maintain that the drugs were then distributed across several Maryland counties. Apparently, authorities are also investigating potential insurance fraud in addition to the drug charges in this case.

The woman authorities charged in this case has been released while she awaits trial. Others face criminal charges stemming from this alleged prescription drug ring. Allegations range from possession charges to possession with intent to distribute and passing fraudulent prescriptions. These serious charges could likely come with significant penalties, including fines and potential jail time if a conviction is obtained.

Even bearing that in mind, it is important for Maryland readers to remember that our judicial system makes the presumption of innocence an important legal right for every defendant. This means that prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the drug charges they allege are actually true, and that the people they accuse are the individuals responsible. To be sure that one’s rights are being fully protected, anyone facing such serious charges would benefit from consulting with experienced legal counsel.
